First HW assignment for Semester 2.

In addition to our study of Reformation art in the 16th century, we will also be looking at the work of Ancient Africa in Chapter 13. Answers to the following questions are due no later than Wednesday, Feb. 1. Students from Period 3 who do not meet that day may either email their response, drop it off in Rm 374, or place it in my mailbox.
1. Why is the study of Ancient African art so different from our previous studies of European art?
2. How might a person of Igbo-Ukwu be buried as exemplified in figure 13-5?
3. How did Benin rise, fall, then rise again?
4. What is the extensive iconography of Hip Mask in figure 13-11?
5. How are the buildings of Great Zimbabwe constructed, and why do we believe that they were NOT fortresses?
