Chapter 19 Homework Redux

As pointed out to me today, the homework assignment originally posted here this weekend was indeed a repeat of what you've already accomplished and mastered. Below is the assignment for the next chapter, and it deviates somewhat from the standard format we've taken. Rather than answering a series of questions throughout the chapter, I'm asking you to look closely at 5 works of art and analyze them using the guidelines listed here. This assignment is due on Tuesday, Jan. 15

Using the Image Analysis format listed below, each student will study, analyze and write their assessment of the images attached here. All images are also available in your text for closer scrutiny.

Each assessment should address the following points:

1. IDENTIFY COMPLETELY: (e.g. artist, title, date, medium, size, etc.)

2. STYLISTIC PERIOD or CULTURE: (When/Where – This is different from merely knowing the date.)

3. SUBJECT/ICONOGRAPHY: (What is the idea/concept? Where and when is this taking place? Who or what is being represented here?)

4. STYLE/TECHNIQUE: (Analyze the ways in which the artists handle form, color, shape texture, lines, and light. What kinds of material does the artist use? How does the artist apply technique and sense of composition? In what ways do scale and point of view come into play? Analyze the artist’s use of design principles.)

5. SIGNIFICANCE/FUNCTION/PURPOSE: (How does the work convey social, political, popular or religious values of that culture? What is the unique vision of the artist or patron? What is the purpose of the work and where is its original and intended setting?)
