Fourteenth Century Art In Europe

Answers to the following questions are due no later than Monday, November 30. They may be turned in at any point before hand, or emailed to brian.flinn@reg5.k12.ct.us.

1. Explain the Italo-Byzantine style and its influence on 14th century painters.
2. Discuss the Allegory of Good Government in the City and the Country in the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena. Consider the technique, the style, the subject matter and the commission itself.
3. Who was Petrarch? State his contributions.
4. Define the designation “humanism”. Did it have an impact on the arts?
5. Discuss the creation of Duccio’s Maesta. Address specifics, such as its purpose, its size, the style, the technique and subject matter. What is its present day condition?
6. Explain the role of guilds in 14th century Europe.
7. Discuss the achievements of Giotto.
8. Discuss the choice of subject matter and the placement of the images in Giotto’s Scrovegni Chapel.
